What we can do to conserve our Ecosystems
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO MANAGE WATERSHED ECOSYSTEMS?
Global environmental changes have occurred and has resulted from the advances of science and technology and the development of new innovation for social and economic development and poverty alleviation
Information on global change such a population increase, ozone layer depletion, global warming, loss of biological diversity, deforestation pollution, contamination of water sources, loss of catchment areas has been disseminated throughout the world.
some impacts that have been identified around Globe can be as follows
There has been increased respiration, transpiration and evaporation from plants vegetation and the soil surface and this has resulted in to lower out puts from the enterprise, there has been also actions of allelopathic and Phyto toxic chemicals in the soils and atmosphere, this is in the view that some of the components chosen in the field were not properly selected thus there is a need for them to be replaced or else to root pruned
Higher activities of pests and diseases and increased tendency for epidemic outbreak during and after weather extremes
Damage to the photosynthetic apparatus and to nitrogen fixing plants due to increased ultra violet radiation
Increased dangers of storms throw as a result of greater frequency and kinetic forces of storms
Increased lightening frequencies and violence
Increased surface run off resulting into serious soil erosion and reduce soil productivity.
Greater heat and droughtstress and water shortage during more prolonged period of dry weather and generally more un balanced moisture regime
All the above have been found ultimately to affect all the ecosystems (fresh water, forest, Agro and grass land ecosystems. current status indicates that, the water shed ecosystem has been drastically declined e.g. human activities associated with fresh ecosystem like irrigation drainage, reclamation, settlement. Similarly, the forest ecosystem have been deforested and degraded, where as in the Agro ecosystems the serious growing demands for land is forcing people to farm anywhere including wetlands
Similarly, in the grass land ecosystem meant for food production and animal grazing there is serious indicators of land degradation
Failure to manage the water shed ecosystem, we can predict that a scenario where there will be survival for the fittest in that the first-class people with access to resources and wealth fight to increase their wealth and poor will be left to remain poorer.
My recommendation to such acts is we need to create awareness campaigns both at national and local levels about the water shed ecosystems protection, we need to encourage water harvesting strategy, this can be done by government, educational sectors sensitization NGOs, individual stake holders among others. There is need to strengthen land tenure system rights of communities, we also need to fight corruption and develop incentives that can promote self-driven inanities such as tree planting, Agroforestry technologies, in order to reduce emission from deforestation and forest degradation
More so, there is need to initiate and support community organizations to assist the communities in articulating and lobbing for their rights over natural resources and also as a platform for community involvement in management of natural resources government can go ahead to strengthen the land tenure rights of the communities, efforts under the land fund need to be operationalized and made realistic in line with the
expectation of the land loads
So, on the university and other learning institution since there is too much population of the youth there should a body or clubs uniting all students who loves environmental protection issues to work with already established International and national parties to promote environmental awareness and conservation national wide. You can define body as a student-based body, charity, supporting, volunteer conducting environmental and field conservation projects. to ensure public awareness and participation in environmental conservation.
Engage a broad range of stake holders, citizens, schools, non- profit Organizations, Associations, Religious organizations and private partners to become volunteers in environmental activities to protect, restore, and educate citizens about environmental concerns.
The body formed can open up partnerships in Environmental Management. with other Organizations, companies, Educational Institutions, and individuals to meet its vision, mission and objectives.
Involvement of students and communities in environmental conservation. Both national and international parties called up to be part of growing environmental conservation family.
